HONG KONG

Darley Stud could hardly have wished for better results from yesterday’s International meeting at Sha Tin in Hong Kong.

The Group 1 Hong Kong Cup (2000m) was taken out by the Zabeel champion Vengeance Of Rain, who is a son of the Darley owned Danehill mare Danelagh.

Vengeance Of Rain is a $300,000 graduate of the 2002 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Sale.

The gelding’s stirring victory, which lifted his earnings beyond $A6million, rounded out a great day for Darley, after Cape Cross’ daughter Ouija Board had earlier won the Group 1 HK Vase (2400m).

Cape Cross, a son of Green Desert, stood his first four southern hemisphere seasons at Cambridge Stud in New Zealand.

With the oldest of those progeny now four-year-olds, Cape Cross has produced seven stakes winners, including the recent Group 1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas winner Seachange.

Kindacross was a Group 1 winner for the sire last season.

From just over 100 runners, he is the sire of 65 individual southern hemisphere winners at a winner to runner ratio of better than 60%.

Worldwide, he is the sire of 22 stakes winners and more than 170 winners at a similar strike rate.

Ouija Board, a $4million earner, has been by far and away his best performer to date.

Cape Cross didn’t shuttle to the southern hemisphere in 2004, but joined the Darley roster in 2005, where he covered a full book (he was limited to about 100 mares) at an advertised fee of $44,000.

Sha Tin fans didn’t have their idol Silent Witness to cheer on this year, but Vengeance Of Rain filled the local void admirably with his Cup win.

It completed a remarkable 2005 for the gelding, whose wins this year also included the Hong Kong Derby and QE II Cup.

He is from the 1998 Blue Diamond winner Danelagh (ex Perth Cup winner Palatious).

Danelagh was raced by Keith Biggs, who also races Vengeance Of Rain’s full-sister Dizelle, the AJC Oaks winner of this year.

Danelagh has since been acquired by Darley, who race her three-year-old son Hachiman (by Fusaichi Pegasus), a horse that is now back in work after having just the one start last season when last of six at Flemington in July.

Danelagh’s 2003 Carnegie foal died, but she has a filly by Elusive Quality entered for the 2006 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Unfortunately her Reset foal from this year also died and it may be that after the Elusive Quality filly, there will be no more progeny of Danelagh to race in Australia.

The mare is bound the United States in the next couple of days to join Sheikh Mohammad’s elite broodmare band north of the equator.

Danelagh will be covered by Elusive Quality to northern hemisphere time early next year.

ENGLAND

The King George VI Chase is being run at Sandown this year as Kempton is undergoing some restructuring work.
There will be 11 runners line up for the nearly 5000m Grade 1 Steeplechase with the two who fought out the finish last year back again. Kicking King held out Kingscliff last year, and while Kingscliff turned the tables at a recent meeting, Kicking King twisted a shoe in that race and looks as if he will live up to his 6/4 quote. Kingscliff is around 2/1, and the talented L'ami is at 7/1 together with Henrietta Knight's Impek. We will put a little of the Christmas pudding on Cornish Rebel, Best Mate's full brother, whereer he runs.

There is another "K" horse favourite for the Welsh National to be run at Chepstow on Tuesday. But One Knight hasn't been on the track in a year and this may be a bit of an ask. Cornish Rebel is second favourite here but may prefer Sandown because of the weights. Bet value may be World Wide Web at 8/1, trained by Jonjo O'Neill. Comply or Die and McKelvey are both 10/1 and on 12s Control Man, L'Aventure, Lord Transcent, Royal Auclair (probably going to Sandown) and Strong Resolve.

Saddest news from the jumps this week is the loss of Rooster Booster, who won the 2003 Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham and was a really popular horse. The 11yo was out on the gallops having a run in preparation of the Christmas Hurdle on Boxing Day

AMERICA

Australia's highest priced yearling of 2004 has made a winning start to his career in America.

Danehill colt Overlord, sold a for then Australian yearling record price of $2.2 million, began his new life for trainer Patrick Biancone with a win over 6 1/2 furlongs on Turfway Park's synthetic polytrack on December 18.

Raced by the Coolmore partnership of Michael Tabor and Susan Magnier, Overlord went into training as a two-year-old with Lee Freedman and raced once as a late two-year-old in May for a win at Caloundra in Queeneland.

His only other start for Freedman was as an early three-year-old in August when he finished third at Werribee.

The decisjon was then made to further Overlord's career and international stud value by transferring him to America where his pedigree will attract considerable attention.

The US has embraced sons of Danehill and will see Overlord as a fine stud prospect as he is closely related to champion sire Storm Cat.

Overlord's dam Prawn Cocktail is a half-sister to Storm Cat's dam, the Secretariat mare Terlingua.

Prawn Cocktail and Terlingua are also half-sisters to Breeders' Cup Mile winner and top rank shuttle sire Royal Academy.

Prawn Cocktail's other foals by Danehill include Australian Group winners Langoustine and One

IRELAND

There's a great week of Irish racing ahead which will see the likes of Moscow Flyer, Beef Or Salmon, Hedgehunter, Solerina and War Of Attrition battle it out in some of the epic races of the Christmas Festivals

Tuesday’s card at Leopardstown is undoubtedly a tremendous day’s racing and features the Paddy Power Dial-a-Bet Chase in which Jessica Harrington’s Moscow Flyer is likely to renew rivalry with Dessie Hughes’ Central House who beat him in the Fortria Chase at Navan in November.

Moscow Flyer should strip a lot fitter this time round and despite his advancing years is likely to start favourite but Central House did win this event last year and is a much improved performer now.

Other notable entries here are Rathgar Beau, Hi Cloy and Watson Lake in what could be a real cracker.

Tuesday's €190,000 Paddy Power Handicap Chase likely to attract a full field of 30.

Runner up in the race 12 months ago, Arthur Moore’s Jaquouille warmed up for this with a run over hurdles at Fairyhouse in early December and he will be one of the leading fancies.

Recent Troytown Chase winner Prince Of Tara must be respected along with the second and third placed horses on that occasion, A New Story and Monterey Bay, while Christy

Roche’s lightly raced Lost Time and David Wachman’s Knock Knock are two sure to be well supported in the betting market.

The Future Champions Novice Hurdle is always a most important trial for Cheltenham and after an impressive victory at Fairyhouse three weeks ago, the Noel Meade trained Iktitaf should prove difficult to beat.

However, the well regarded O’Muircheartaigh will be expected to put up an improved showing after going down by five lengths to Meade’s charge at Fairyhouse.

Beef Or Salmon is a standing dish at Leopardstown over Christmas and Michael Hourigan’s hugely popular chaser goes for his third victory in the last four runnings of the Lexus Chase on Wednesday.

Winner of the race as a novice in 2002, he finished third 12 months later before gaining a memorable victory over triple Gold Cup hero, Best Mate, last year and after his fine second to Kingscliff in the Betfair Chase at Haydock in November, he looks set to start favourite.

Despite a disappointing effort at Punchestown recently the ‘Mouse’ Morris trained War Of Attrition would have to be respected while English Grand National hero Hedgehunter, and Michael O’Brien’s Forget The Past are two worthy contenders.

The Christmas Hurdle is likely to have a small field but the presence of the remarkable Solerina will be of considerable interest.

Although she is yet to win over three miles, connections feel it is worth taking a chance that she will last home but if Michael Halford’s Golden Cross takes his chance, he would prove difficult to beat after getting to within a short head of Solerina in the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse last time out.

Despite the absence of Hardy Eustace, the December Festival Hurdle should be a fascinating affair with old rivals Brave Inca, Harchibald, Macs Joy and Essex all set to do battle.

Harchibald was a silky smooth winner of the Bula Hurdle at Cheltenham recently and provided the ground is not too soft, he is sure to take the world of beating but Brave Inca is a tremendously tough competitor and won’t be easily beaten.

Essex is an improving young horse with a bright future and Macs Joy won the race in 2004.

At Louisiana Downs last week in the John Franks Memorial Stks a horse called Sreen Idol won the race. This guy is out of the Strawberry Road mare Silken Screen. Ther was a half a dozen group 3s run over the week but thye Texas Mile Stakes was the biggest run at Lone Star Park. It was won by High Strike Zone who is by Smart Strike out of Danzig Island. No prizes for guessing the maternal sier of this lady.

Makybe Diva went down in the Tenno Sho Gr1 in Japan this week and guess who won Suzuka Mambo . Just look at the last name Mambo you guessed it. Hes out of the King Mambo mare Spring Mambo. The King Mambo breed are on fire at the moment.

Last Week

The Craven Stakes at Newmarket England won by Democratic Deficit who is by the Nureyev stallion Soviet Star out of the Danehill mare Grandiose Idea bred to be the best so it was no surprise to see him win the 8 furlong 50000 pound event. Soviet Star is starting to prove himself as a producer of some top horses. Vengeance of Rain won the group1 QE11 cup at Sha Tin track Beating a disappointing Grand Arhmee and Elvestrom . On the same programme the Australian bred Silent Witness made it a world record 17 straight wins breaking Cigars 16 straight.

Aidan O'Brien added to his 2,000 Guineas success on Saturday when Virginia Waters came from last to first to win the Ultimatepoker.com 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket on Sunday.

With Kieren Fallon in the saddle, Virginia Waters came home by two and a half lengths from the Irish-bred Maids Causeway and in the process, O’Brien and his new stable rider became the first trainer-jockey combination to complete the Guineas double since 1967.

This win was giving O’Brien his first success in the 1,000 Guineas and he has now trained the winner of all five British Classics.

O’Brien said, “She is out of a Sadler’s Wells mare and wasn’t stopping,” and the winner might now become the stable’s Epsom Oaks runner if Kitty O’Shea is forced to miss the race.
