Northern Dancer
Fairy Bridge
The theory goes that the all-conquering European
sire legend is yet to truly assert his superiority either as a sire or a sire
of sires down under. Gallileo
and Montjeu, arguably two of his best sons to shuttle south, could either
make or break that theory in the next five years. So too might the addition of his brilliant six
times Group One winning son High Chaparral to a future Coolmore roster. At a time when many critics have the knives out
for Sadler's Wells, his siblings Fairy King and Nureyev have enjoyed a
resurgence as sire producers this season earning praise from several quarters
mainly through the deeds of Encosta De Lago, Stravinsky, Fasliyev and
Spinning World. Once
upon a time, or so the fairytale has it, there was once only one sireline in
Australia - Star Kingdom. Then along came the magical Northern Dancer, a new
line which many traditionalists at the time said "wouldn't work in
Australia". It's
amazing how time and experience can change the opinions of even the most
seasoned. That
could well be the case with Sadlers Wells. In
fairness to the son of Northern Dancer, he is yet to be fully tested as a sire
in Australia with only a handful of Southern Hemisphere bred Sadler's Wells
yearlings sold in Australasian sales rings. |
