Silent
Witness won his 17th straight race at the $384,664 Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup
on Sunday, a streak that tops the North American and European records. Silent
Witness, unbeaten for his career, drew away down the stretch in a ride by
Felix Coetzee. The winner covered the nearly 7 furlongs in 1:21 at Sha Tin
Racecourse. This was Silent Witness's first run beyond 6 furlongs. The North American mark of 16 consecutive wins is shared by Citation (1948-50), Cigar (1994-96) and Hallowed Dreams (1999-00). In Europe, Ribot (1954-56) completed his career at 16-for-16. Trained by Tony Cruz and owned by Arthur Antonio and
Betty da Silva, Silent Witness earned Horse of the Year and champion sprinter
honors in Hong Kong last year. He is undefeated in four starts this season,
all at Sha Tin. Silent Witness has become a Hong Kong celebrity. On Sunday, fans cheered and waved black flags with a green cross, the jockey's colors. The Hong Kong Jockey Club has set up a Web site for the horse, and a retailer designed a clothing line in his honor.
