Danzig is one of Northern Dancers greatest sire sons. He has had an enormous impact on world and Australasian horse racing through sire sons like Anabaa, Maroof, Bianconi, Grand Royale, Langfuhr, Green Desert and his sons Desert Sun, Volksraad, and of course the mighty Danehill who with his sons almost rule Australian racing. I really see the domination being more the overall Danzig breed. They seem to have  an uncanny will to win at the end of races plus their consistency at top level is out of this world. Most of the breed excel up to 2000m but they tend to struggle beyond this even his mighty son Danehill progeny have trouble with 2400m. I much prefer the Danzigs other than Danehills progeny from 1000m to 1400m.

The death in the US of Danzig, the sire responsible for giving the world a host of champions including Danehill, has ended an era in international thoroughbred breeding.

The son of a champion sire and the father of another, Danzig was euthanased on January 3 at Claiborne Farm, the Kentucky stud that had been his home for most of his 29 years. Unbeaten in his only three startsIn 1991 Danzig became North America's leading sire for the first time, repeating the effort in the next two years to become the first horse since Bold Ruler almost 30 years earlier to win the title for three years on end

In all, he sired the winners of a North American record of 188 stakes races

In all, Danzig sired 1,074 foals who have won more than $US101 million.

LATEST NEWS

Danzig is one of the most dominant modern speed influences and also has had a number of his progeny become strong middle distance performers.

However none of the great sire's 43 Group1 winners have been successful in a Derby at 2400m, something his sons and grandsons are rectifying.

In the past fortnight two 2400m classic in Australia have been won by Danzig descendants.

The first leg of this double was provided when Cats Fun was successful in the WA Derby at Ascot on April 8.

The winner is by Catbird, the Golden Slipper winner by Danzig's champion son Danehill.

Cats Fun was followed by the dominating win by a grandson of Danzig, Headturner in the AJC Derby at Randwick on Easter Saturday.

A son of the world class Danzig sprinter Anabaa, Headturner had not won a stakes race prior to the Derby but he had shown up as a top class performer with an unlucky third in the Victoria Derby and a fourth in the Rosehill Guineas won by De Beers.

BIANCONI

Consistent four-year-old gelding Above Deck, winner of the Listed Japan Racing Association Plate at Randwick on Easter Monday, could be a budding Group One prospect for his sire Bianconi.

Above Deck's easy win took the record of the Victorian bred and trained stayer to eight wins from 24 starts and his earnings to just under $400,000.

Bianconi, a son of Danzig, had so much inherant speed he was recognised as the champion three-year-old sprinter in Ireland for 1998. Above Deck's Randwick victory gave the first crop progeny by Bianconi his third feature race success for April.

The other two wins were both provided in Perth by the mare Valparaiso, successful on April 1 in a Listed event over 1400m and then the Kentiara Classic at 1600m.

ANABAA

One of the great qualities of Danzig's descendants has been their capacity to generate brilliant horses when put over speed influenced mares and stouter performers when matched with those with stamina in their backgrounds.

Cats Fun and Headturner are examples of this nick as both are from daughters of Zabeel.

The gelded Headturner is the second Derby winner for Anabaa to go with Anabaa Blue, now at stud in France where he won their Derby in 2001.

Headhunter is the first stakes winner at 2400 metres in six generations in his family and his first six dams never won beyond 1600m.
