Australian Stallions to Carry on the Northern Dancer male line

Redoutes Choice

Danehill   Shanthas Choice

He was Champion First Crop Sire in 2004.

In 2005 he was Champion Sire of Two-Year-Olds, Champion Second Crop Sire and Leading Active Sire of
Australia.

Hot on the heels of his second successive Golden Slipper Stakes success the all-conquering Redoute's Choice has sired his first Group winner in South Africa.

Bishop's Rock provided his champion young sire with an international Group win in the G2 Colorado King Stakes at Turffontein on April 8.

Commands

Danehill    Cotehele House

Commands belongs to a family whose history is as rich as that of any royal house.
Every branch of Commands’ maternal pedigree contributes to a virtual Who’s Who of Australasian racing. From his great-grand dam Klairessa to his brother Danewin and in every direction in between, the champions appear.

Two generations back is the mare Eight Carat, an unexceptional galloper who produced the exceptional racehorses Octagonal, Mouawad, Kaapstad, Marquise and Diamond Lover

Encosta De Lago

Fairy King

In his first six covering seasons, Encosta De Lago met with 834 mares, an average of 139 per season. His largest book came in 2002 when he broke the double century mark at 201, whilst his lightest book was 98 in 2000 for his fourth crop, which are now yearlings.

At the time of writing, Encosta De Lago has produced 128 individual winners from 211 starters. That represents a strong 60.7% winners to runners ratio, which places him among the most prolific winner producing sires in Australasia.

Montjeu

Sadlers Wells

Hurricane Run, winner of five races this year including the Budweiser Irish Derby and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, was named Horse Of The Year at the 2005 Cartier Racing Awards in London on November 16.

The three-year-old star of Montjeu's outstanding first crop

BORN WITH WINGS

THE NORTHERN DANCER DYNASTY

SADLER'S WELLS

Northern Dancer                               Fairy Bridge

He was sired by the most successful stallion of modern times out of the dam of Fairy King, Tate Gallery, Fairy Gold, Hermitage, Perugino, and Special dam of Nureyev etc. Sadler's Wells won six of his 11 starts as a racehorse at 7-10 furlongs, including the Group 3 Beresford Stakes at two, and at three the Group 2 Irish Derby Trial and three Group 1s - Irish 2,000 Guineas, Eclipse Stakes, and Phoenix Champion Stakes. He went to stud at four and has sired over 110 stakes winners, which include some 70 Group/Graded winners. Among them are 31 Group 1/Grade 1 winners, namely: Braashee, French Glory, In The Wings, Old Vic, Prince Of Dance, Scenic, Salsabil, Opera House, Saddlers' Hall, El Prado, Johann Quatz, Masad, Fatherland, Fort Wood, Intrepidity, Carnegie, King's Theatre, Northern Spur, Moonshell, Muncie, Poliglote, Chief Contender, Dance Design, Luna Wells, Cloudings, Ebadiyla, Entrepreneur, In Command, King Of Kings, Kayf Tara and Dream Well. The last three mentioned all won Group 1s in the 1998 season; King Of Kings - 2,000 Guineas (8 furlongs); Kayf Tara - Ascot Gold Cup (20 furlongs); Dream Well - French Derby and Irish Derby (both 12 furlongs).

Sadler's Wells is the phenomenon of the era in Europe and is expressing a degree of dominance unmatched by even the likes of Hyperion and Nearco. However, he is essentially a sire of European turf winners, at middle distances and beyond, and as such does not excite American breeding.

DANZIG

Northern Dancer                    Pas de Nom

Danzig is one of Northern Dancers greatest sire sons. He has had an enormous impact on world and Australasian horse racing through sire sons like Anabaa, Maroof, Bianconi, Grand Royale, Langfuhr, Green Desert and his sons Desert Sun, Volksraad, and of course the mighty Danehill who with his sons almost rule Australian racing. I really see the domination being more the overall Danzig breed. They seem to have  an uncanny will to win at the end of races plus their consistency at top level is out of this world. Most of the breed excel up to 2000m but they tend to struggle beyond this even his mighty son Danehill progeny have trouble with 2400m. I much prefer the Danzigs other than Danehills progeny from 1000m to 1400m.

    NUREYEV

    Northern Dancer                   Special

Born at Claibourne Farm Kentucky in 1977. He was sold for 1.3 Million dollars to Stavros Niarchos. Who named him after the famous Russian ballet star Rudolph Nureyev.

This is a classic story of overcoming the odds. He sustained an injury in1987 where he normally would have been euthanasiad

Nureyev had three starts on the racetrack for three wins but in his final start he was disqualified in the 1980 2000 Guineas for causing interference. It was his stud career which was to bring fame and fortune to his owners. Even with the fertility problems he was still able to produce 761 live foals to continue his dynasty.

He fractured his off hind leg below the hock in 1987 and was nursed back to health by Dr. J.D Howard and the staff at his home Walmac Stud from then on he had a stall of his own. It was his breeding barn as he was unable to be put into the paddock due to this injury. The barn was a photo gallery showing all the stages of his recovery from this severe injury. From 19 crops of racing age, Nureyev is represented by 128 stakes winners including 71 graded winners. His five champions include 1987 champion grass horse Theatrical (Ire) and multiple international champion Miesque.

       FAIRY KING

Northern Dancer            Fairy Bridge

Fairy King is two time champion sire of France and the full brother  to Sadlers Wells. The impact he is starting to have on Australias racing scene is through his son Encosta De Lago he is challenging Danehill and Zabeel for Australias number one stallion. Most of the breed have a liking for wet tracks as does his full brothers Sadlers Wells.

NORTHERN DANCER

NEARTIC                                     NATALMA

NEARCO            LADY ANGELA        NATIVE DANCER    ALMAHMOUD

Foaled on May 27, 1961, at E. P. Taylor’s Windfields Farm near Oshawa, Ontario, Canada,  Northern Dancer came from the first crop of Canadian champion Nearctic and was the first foal of  Native Dancer mare Natalma.  Native Dancer the grey ghost was a  public idol who won 21 of his 22 starts losing only the 1953  Kentucky Derby to Dark Star.

NORTHERN DANCERS RACE RECORD

Northern Dancer was a small but powerful colt with a lively temperament. Northern Dancer made his debut on August 2, 1963, winning a 5 1/2-furlong maiden race at Fort Erie racetrack by 6 3/4 lengths in 1:06 1/5 under apprentice rider Ron Turcotte. He was beaten by four lengths by Ramblin Road in the 6 1/2-furlong Vandal Stakes at the same track two weeks later  then scored a 1 1/4-length victory in the Summer Stakes over one mile on turf in heavy going.

Northern Dancer ended his two-year-old season with a five-race winning streak, including the Coronation Futurity and Carleton Stakes in Canada. He sealed his reputation as the best juvenile in Canada with two wins at Aqueduct, first trouncing Futurity Stakes winner Bupers by eight lengths in a one-mile allowance race and then beating Lord Date by two lengths in the Remsen Stakes.

Half fit, he was beaten in his first start at three in 1964 and then won six consecutive races-an allowance race, the Flamingo Stakes, Florida Derby, Blue Grass Stakes, Kentucky Derby, and Preakness Stakes. Each of those victories was characterized by his ability to sit just off the pace at a high cruising speed, produce a sharp burst of acceleration, and then persevere gamely to the line much of that he has passed on to his progeny.  In the Kentucky Derby, Northern Dancer showed the advantage of being small and shifty, staying clear of trouble on the final turn. The little Nearctic colt won by a neck over Hill Rise in a track record 2:00.

Northern Dancer won the Preakness by daylight, prevailing by 2 1/4 lengths over The Scoundrel, who had finished third in the Derby, with Hill Rise taking third. Northern Dancer’s winning streak ended in the Belmont Stakes, in which he finished third, sixth lengths behind winner Quadrangle. The colt strained a tendon in the race. He had one more race, winning the Queen’s Plate by 7 1/2 lengths, but the tendon went soon afterward and ended Northern Dancer’s racing career.

GENETICS

SH SH SH SH

This started a dynasty of horses with wings  as Northern Dancers progeny took the thoroughbred industry by storm and still do today.  Few, if any, stallions have ever sired as many good stallion sons as has Northern Dancer. His male-line ancestor Phalaris sired five top stallions in Pharos, Fairway, *Pharamond II, *Sickle, and Colorado. Phalaris’s grandson and Northern Dancer’s grandsire, Nearco, sired. *Nasrullah, *Royal Charger, Dante, *Amerigo, and Nearctic. Nasrullah, probably the next best sire of sires of the century, got Bold Ruler, Never Bend, Red God, Grey Sovereign, Never Say Die, and Nashua.

The Phalaris disease.

In his first crop, foaled in 1966, Northern Dancer sired ten stakes winners from 21 foals, a 47.6% strike rate.  He had 22 subsequent crops of foals, Northern Dancer is arguably the best sire of racehorses in the history of the thoroughbred breed. The great son of Nearctic sired 146 stakes winners from 645 foals, or 22.6%.

Northern Dancer can count at least ten sons as truly outstanding sires: Be My Guest, Danzig, El Gran Senor, Fairy King, Lyphard, Nijinsky II, Northern Taste, Nureyev, Sadler’s Wells and Vice Regent. Here in Australia he left his mark with stallions like Jugah, Danzatore,  and Night Shift amongst others.

In the United States it's his grandson Storm Cat who is dominating and taking the honour as the highest priced stallion worldwide. In Europe, Sadlers Wells has dominated for so long and now his sons are taking over where their legendary father finished. While here in Australia our racing is under Danzigs control right now. Look through a Saturday race meeting in Australia and his sons Danehill, Bianconi, Langfuhr,Mister C,Belong To Me and sons of Danehill and Green Desert  have other breeds taking a backseat. Danehill and his sons hold down eight spots on the top twenty leading sire list in Australia. Anabaa  is one more Danzig stallion who producers horses with wings so keep an eye out for these flyers.

Danzigs excel from 1000m to 1600m and this has been the domain of the Star Kingdom line for so many years in this country. You only have to look at the Golden Slipper how Danehill and his sons have dominated this race over the last fifteen years. This year it was Miss Finland. While 2000m and up to the Derby distance has been left to Danehill himself. The future hold a lot of promise for the Danzig breed and I can't see the Star Kingdom male line holding off the Northern Dancer invasion.

You now see  three other closely related Northern Dancer stallions Nureyev ,Fairy King and Sadlers Wells stamping their mark on Australian racing. Fairy Kings son Encosta De Lago and Zabeel the great New Zealand stallion who is out of  a Nureyev broodmare are competing with Danehill for the Australian sire title. While Sadlers Wells has had enormous influence in Europe, his sons, Singspiel and Montjeu are starting to make their mark down under. I feel Nureyev is the stallion that could outperform them all. His broodmares have always produced quality but it's his sons who are slowly but surely leaving their mark across the globe. These include Stravinski, Spinning World, Fasilyev and the cream of them all Peintre Celebre who has started to produce some top racehorses in Australia and overseas. One that comes to mind on the Australian scene is Bentley Biscuit who recently had a unbeaten record of eight in a row of course that came to an end but he did run a great third in the group 1 Doncaster. The Northern Dancer dynasty has and will continue to produce horses with wings.
