This Fairy King stallion has held down a top three spot on the Australian sires list for the past couple of years. His progeny can win fresh. Preferred distances are 1000m to 2000m and are very capable even up to 2400m. I like to wait and see them at 1200m to 1600 at Caulfield or Moonee Valley.. They handle wet or dry and seem to handle most tracks but do tend to favour the smaller tracks where they can sit on the speed and kick clear in the straight or just wait for the last shot at them. I would rate this breed as one of the most adaptable out of the top Australian stallions. They also come to hand as two year olds.

In his first six covering seasons, Encosta De Lago met with 834 mares, an average of 139 per season. His largest book came in 2002 when he broke the double century mark at 2001, whilst his lightest book was 98 in 2000 for his fourth crop, which are now yearlings.

At the time of writing, Encosta De Lago has produced 128 individual winners from 211 starters. That represents a strong 60.7% winners to runners ratio, which places him among the most prolific winner producing sires in Australasia.

For a stallion who started his career in the under $10,000 price bracket, Encosta De Lago’s list of thirteen stakeswinners and fifteen stakesplacegetters is very impressive.

Consistent with the trend in his overall winners list, Encosta De Lago’s black type earners are equally spread between the sexes.

At the very top level, Encosta De Lago has produced two Group One winners in the now retired Delago Brom (ex Brompton Cross by El Qahira), and the recent Melbourne Spring Carnival hero Titanic Jack (ex Gold Tunic by Stage Door Johnny).

Their respective Group One wins in the Caulfield Guineas and the Emirates Stakes were both over the mile journey, which seems to be the pet distance for most Encosta De Lago’s.

His first crop which was born in 1998 has seven black type earners headed by stakes and or group winners Chong Tong (ex Coquetry by Zoffany), Gold Lottey (ex Lottey by Bellotto)and Dragila (ex Calypso Breeze by Centaine).

The following crop born in 1999 has provided Encosta De Lago with his most bountiful thus far and includes another ten black type earners. This group includes Encosta De Lago’s principal earners Delago Brom and Titanic Jack, who are backed up ably by another four Group or Stakeswinners in Lashed (ex Traffic Watch by Salieri), Vocabulary (ex Lady Linguist by Marauding), Cool Azz (ex Wake Up Sam by Noalcoholic) and Gazania (ex Viminaria by El Qahira).

Encosta De Lago’s third crop which hit the ground in 2000 have added a further seven black type earners to their dads growing tally. Group or Stakeswinners from this list are Delzao (ex Amanusa by Alzao), Lago Delight (ex Sweet Delight by Rancho Ruler) and Cahuita (ex Kinlochleven by King Tobias).

5g Bit of Bliss A.Mallyon 1600m Mvall I feel it was the slow track that led to this win but 1600m is about perfect for this breed. But he has won 4 from 5 on slow tracks.

3f Money Spider Melham Freedman slow Moonee Valley 1600m back to 1200m very flexible breed although I think there is a liking for the Valley here and slow tracks.
